Dear 2017 students,

Here is a folder with three files on Essay Writing.

Today, in our introductory class (Friday, March 31st), we worked on the PPP "Introduction to Essay Writing from Refining Composition Skills". This is a PDF version of it. You will see that it´s in black and white, so you won´t be able to see the colors with wich signal the different parts of the essay paragraphs.

I have also uploaded a ppp with a few pictures of the park, and a copy of the essay. On Friday, April 7th, we will work on outlining and on the structure of developmental paragraphs.

Looking forward to working with you on the virtual platform.

Kind regards,

Prof. Argerich

Groups 1 2 3 and Groups A and B updated March 29th 2017

Dear 2016 Language III students,

I’m writing to you to ask you to disenroll from the Virtual Platform (Aula Virtual Idioma III). The reason why I´m asking this is that we would like to start systematically using the platform with the year 2017 new students. Last year, we mostly used the blog, and we will continue doing so with those of you who still have to sit for the final exam.

In case you don´t receive this message, or can´t take the time to do what I´m asking for, don´t worry; on the weekend we will disenroll all of you.

If you have any doubts or concernes, please see me in my office hours or right after class:

My office hours:
Mondays            9:30 – 2:30
Wednesdays     13:40 – 16:40

My class hours:
Tuesdays            10:00 – 11:40     Room 14
Wednesdays     12:00 – 13:40     Room B11
Fridays                 08:00 – 9:40        Room B11

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Prof. Amparo Argerich

Language III First Class 2017 Instrucctions for the first term

Sunday, March 12, 2017

Dear students,

The essay topic of the Language III final exam on Wednesday, March 15th, 2017 will be based on the short stories The Legacy, by Virginia Woolf, and The Colonel´s Lady, by Somerset Maugham. You will be asked to COMPARE two characters, either Angela and Evie, or Gilbert and George.

After reading the short stories, you should try to make a list of possible points of comparison for both pairs of characters, but you´ll be asked to write on just one the pairs.

You should read our notes on the comparison and contrast mode of development posted on this blog on August 25th, 2016. On the PPP we uploaded, there is an example of an outline following the conventions we agreed on in class (slide 19). Please note that on slides 15 and 17 the topic sentences are expressed by means of noun phrases, and this is not what you should do.

Also, on slides 21 and 23, there are lists of connectors used in the comparison mode of development. Make sure you see how they are used in context.

You should also revise our instructions for Introductions and Conclusions, which were posted on September 15th, 2016.

Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Warm regards,

Prof. A. Argerich
