Essay topic for the LANGUAGE III (2018 and previous years) final written exam

Dear students,

The essay topic for the final Language III (2018 and previous years) exam on Wednesday, March 11th, 2020 will be based on A Drink in the Passage. The topic for the essay is “Discuss the reasons for Edward Simelane’s uneasiness the night he went to see his sculpture at the bookstore”. For this topic, consider the following two main reasons: A) Simelane´s distrust of Van Rensburg, and B) his fear for breaking the law. The mode of development we´ll ask you to use is cause analysis.

Please read the texts carefully. You will be allowed to have the text with you, but take into account that you should not use the author´s exact words; you should use your own words. Review our notes on paraphrasing and use monolingual and collocations dictionaries.

Also, review our notes on cause-effect analysis, outline layout, and the connectors you should use for the different modes of development. Language III 2018 (or previous years) should also review our guidelines on introductory and concluding paragraphs.

When developing the essay you should take into account that you should introduce supporting ideas clearly and straightforwardly (the ideas you presented in your outline), then explain them, and if appropriate, or possible, exemplify them. Your developmental paragraphs should have no less than 200 words each.

Please remember that on Monday, March 9th, and Tuesday, March 10th we will not answer any questions related to the essay topic in office hours, nor will we check possible outlines.

If you have already enrolled, and decide not to take the exam, please send us an email through the platform.

Kind regards,

Prof. A. Argerich

ESSAY TOPIC FOR FINAL EXAM ON FEBRUARY 19TH 2020 FOR LANGUAGE III (2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018) STUDENTS

Dear students,

The essay topic for the final Language III exam on Wednesday, February 19th, 2020 will be based on Kugelmass form The Kugelmass Episode, by Woody Allen

The mode of development we'll ask you to use to discuss the topic is cause-effect analysis. You will have to analyse the negative effects of Kugelmass’ irresponsible behavior on his life. His decision to consult a magician is his irresponsible behavior and everything that happened after is what you should consider for your analysis. We suggest you should consider effects on Kugelmass’ relationships and on his financial situation.

Please read the text very carefully. You will be allowed to have a printed copy of the text with you, but take into account that you should not use the author´s exact words; you should use your own words to report what the author has written. In order to do so, review our notes on paraphrasing and use monolingual and collocations dictionaries.
