Dear students,  

The essay topic for the final Language III exam on Wednesday, December 19th 2018 will be based on The Namesake  by Jumpa Lahiri.

The essay topic will be on Gogol. Please read chapters 6 and 7. The method of development you will be asked to use is contrast. You should focus on Gogol´s attitude towards his family before and after his father passed away. Take into account his parents' way of living and their cultural background. You will be allowed to have a copy of the novel with you.

Don´t forget to review our notes on comparison and/or contrast, the outline layout, and the connectors you should use for the different modes of development. You should also review our guidelines on introductory and concluding paragraphs.

Please remember that on Monday, December 17th, and on Tuesday, December 18th we will not answer questions related to the essay topic in office hours; we will not check your outlines or possible outlines for possible theses statements.

Dear students,  

The essay topic of the Language III final exam on Wednesday, September 26th, 2018 will be based on the short story Labors of the Heart by Claire Davis, and on the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. The essay will be based on the characters Pinky and Montag. The method of development you will be asked to use is comparison. You will be asked to compare Pinky and Montag bearing in mind their sudden awareness of themselves and of the surrounding world (these will be the two points of comparison of your essay). We suggest the “all about one and all about the other” method of organization. You will be allowed to have copies of the texts with you.

Dear students,  

The essay topic of the Language III final exam on Wednesday, July 4th, 2018 will be based on the short stories The Legacy, by Virginia Woolf, and The Colonel´s Lady, by Somerset Maugham. You will be asked to COMPARE two characters, either Angela and Evie, or Gilbert and George.

After reading the short stories, you should try to make lists of possible points of comparison for both pairs of characters, but you´ll be asked to write on just one of the pairs. You will be allowed to have copies of the texts with you.

The essay topic for the final Language III exam on Wednesday, May 16th, 2018 will be based on The Teacher Who Changed My Life by Nicholas Gage.

Please read the text very carefully. You will not be allowed to have the text with you. Don't forget to review our notes on cause-effect analysis, comparison and contrast, outline layout, and the connectors you should use for the different modes of development. You should also review our guidelines on introductory and concluding paragraphs. When developing the essay you should take into account that you should introduce supporting ideas clearly and  straightforwardly, then explain them, and if appropriate, or possible, exemplify them. Your developmental paragraphs should have around 200 words each.

Please remember that on Monday, May 14th, and Tuesday, May 15th we WILL NOT answer any questions related to the essay topic in office hours, nor will we check possible outlines.

Dear students,  

The essay topic for the final Language III exam on Wednesday, March 14th, 2018 will be based on Mr. Johnson from Like a Winding Sheet by Ann Petry (1911-1997)

The mode of development we'll ask you to use to discuss the topic is cause-effect analysis. Please read the text very carefully. Make sure you understand the scene at the all-night restaurant; many students misinterpret it. You should also take into account that it was written before 1946, and that the author used many slang expressions and colloquial language. You will not be allowed to have the text with you. Don't forget to review our notes on cause-effect analysis, outline layout, and the connectors you should use for the different modes of development. You should also review our guidelines on introductory and concluding paragraphs. When developing the essay you should take into account that you should introduce supporting ideas clearly and straightforwardly, then explain them, and if appropriate, or possible, exemplify them.
