List of students who have to give the Language III colloquia on November 16, 2016

Dear students,

This is a message for the students who have to give the colloquia on Wednesday, November 16th, 2016. In case some of you are not sure about your condition, I'm attaching an incomplete list since the situation of two students is still under consideration.

We would like to ask the students on this list to let us know if they have any exams on Wednesday, and at what time they will be available for the colloquia. Please contact us as soon as you know. You may contact us through the TA Emi Daneri.

Please talk to Felix Cramer about your oral presentation (topic, organization of the presentation, sources, among other aspects). You can check his new office hour schedule on my previous post on this blog. You will see that tomorrow he has office hours from 9am to 1 pm and from 2pm to 4pm.

If you have any doubts regarding the colloquia, please come and talk to us in our office hours.

We will soon let you know where we will meet on Wednesday or we´ll leave a note at Room 226.

Kind regards,

Office Hours Updated November 14th 2016

Wednesday, November 9, 2016

Dear students,

We have left most of your mid-term tests in the box at the CELE office. Here I am attaching a document with the results. We have kept a few of your exams to reconsider the results. We will upload Ms Civit´s results tomorrow.

We would also like to tell you that the make-up exam will be an essay and not a questionnaire. The method of development you’ll be asked to use is cause-effect analysis. On Thursday, we will give you the titles of the text or texts on which the exam will be based, and we may discuss some of the main points you may want to analyse. You should revisit our post on Sunday, April 10th, 2016, to review the ppp on cause-effect analysis.

We need the following students to bring their first mid-term test grades to class on Thursday (and will soon be asking other students for other grades):

Mid-Ter Test 1

Iermoli Krochik, Martina Bianca
Jofre, Sol Ayelén
Jáuregui, Natalia Soledad
Linares, María De Los Angeles
Lombardi, María Victoria
Longhi, Julieta Irina
Lucero, Edith Haydee

See you in class on Thursday.

Dear students,

Here is a tentative schedule for the Team Oral Presentations.

Those groups that have to edit the topic, change or add a text, please come and see me in my office hours on Monday, October 24th.

Remember that each group must meet with Felix in his office hours at least once while preparing the presentation. You should discuss with him 1) how you will introduce the members of the group, 2) how you will announce the topic (wording), 3) the main ideas you will be dealing with, 4) the evidence you will provide, among other aspects of your presentation. Felix will keep a record of the groups that have seen him.

Natalia Chavez, Bruno Cacmpos and Luis Gutierrez must join either Group 1 or Group 20. Groups 1 and 20 must incorporate at least one of these three students. Once Groups 1 and 20 have four members, one of these three students may join any group with four students.

I hope you have a nice weekend,

Amparo Argerich

The Namesake Audiobook

Tuesday, October 4, 2016

Dear students,

Here are the instructions on Assignment #8.

Assignment #8 is an essay on the first two or three chapters of The Namesake. The topic is “Contrast Ashima´s and Ashoke´s adaptation to living in America”. You have to write an outline and the essay.

The assignment is due on Friday, October 7th, in class, no later than 9:40. You may hand it in the previous day in class, if you wish.

As with all of your essays, you should include the outline on the first page. The essay should be preceded by a title, and please remember to capitalize the first and all the content words in the title.

You have to write an introductory paragraph, which will contain the thesis statement at the end. We won´t penalize the mistakes in this paragraph. You may write a concluding paragraph, but you don´t have to. However, you do have to include at least the first sentence of the concluding paragraph, with an appropriate connector.

Please print your essay in an A4 sheet and hand it in in a plastic folio with your name in upper-case letters on the right-hand top of the page. Remember to leave space between lines to allow for our feedback. Please, don´t hand it in in a folder.

You will get your essays back on Monday, October 17th, and will work on a second version to hand in in office ours. We will make appointments so that we can discuss your first and second versions with each of you in our office hours. Students who don´t take into account our feedback will fail the assignment.

I´m uploading again the last update of our office hours in case you haven´t seen it on the blog.

See you in class on Thursday.

Kind regards,

Amparo Argerich

Focus on the scene where Montag gets back home after visiting Faber. We will give you the thesis statement and one of the topic sentences, the first one. Also, we will develop the first developmental pararaph. Your job will be to write the second topic sentence, supporting ideas for it, and to develop the second developmental paragraph. You will have to write the concluding sentence to the whole essay as well. You may use your dictionaries, but not your cellphones.

Dear students,

I´m writing to let you know the schedule for the interviews for Assignment #4 in office hours, starting on Monday, May 31st.

Should you have any concerns about the dates assigned to you, please let us know tomorrow in class or after class. I’ll be at the CELE office until 10:30.

I also wanted to tell you that we have decided to ask for a second version of the essay on the short story Tactical Exercise (Assignment #3). The second version of Assignment #3 is due Wednesday, June 1st during class hours (12:00 – 13:40).

You should work on your first version and edit the essay taking into account the feedback provided by the teacher who corrected your paper, and also all our comments made in class during this week. Together with the feedback on your essay and our comments in class, you should review the material on essay writing uploaded on the blog during this semester. When you hand in your assignment, you should include the first version as well; if you don´t, we will not correct the assignment.

Please take into account that you won´t be able to see us in office hours to help you with your second version of Assignment #3. We consider that the feedback we´ve given you should be enough. Also, you may ask general questions during our class tomorrow.

This is all for now. See you tomorrow in class.

Tactical Exercise Questions

Wednesday, April 27, 2016

Dear students,

Today we received the sad news that Prof. Estela Salva, from the Literature Department, has passed away. Our sincere condolences to her family.

Because all academic activities have been cancelled, here is how we have rescheduled your oral presentations:

Ms. Hassan´s students, Liempi, Linares and Linde, will give their ops on Monday, May 2nd at 14:30 during Ms. Hassan’s office hours. These students should bring at least two other classmates as audience for their ops. Ms. Salmaso will talk about this with you in class on Friday.

The students who had to give their oral presentations with me, Cónsoli, Davolio and De La Fontaine, will do so on Friday, April 29th. If they can´t attend classes on Friday, they’ll give their ops on Wednesday, May 4th

Regarding the essays you had to hand in today, Assignment #2, you will hand them in in our class on Friday, April 29th. You may send your assignments with other students in case you can´t attend classes this Friday, but please remember that we won´t receive assignments by email.

Regarding Assignment #1, they will be all available on Friday, either at 9:40 in our classrooms after our class, or in the box in room 226 as from 10 am.

Warm regards,

Amparo Argerich

Sunday, April 24, 2016

Dear students,

I am attaching the outline to the essay on Story of an Hour we worked on this past week. This outline should be the one you hand in next Wednesday (April 27th) as part of your Assignment 2, which is a home assignment.

I am also attaching the first developmental paragraph of the essay; we all worked on it in class as well, on Wednesday, April 20th and on Friday, April 22nd.

What you should do is write the second developmental paragraph using the topic sentence we all agreed on together, which you must copy from the outline. It should be exactly like the sentence in the outline. Please, remember to write a concluding sentence to the paragraph.

You should also write a concluding sentence to the whole essay, which should be introduced by a connector (In conclution, To conclude, Summing up, etc.) and which should be in a separate paragraph. Remember that in the second semester you will be writing introductory and concluding paragraphs, but not during this semester.

Please, remember to leave space between your lines to allow for corrections.
When  you hand in this assignment, remember that the outline, because it is the plan to the essay, should precede the essay.

See you very soon!

Amparo Argerich
